Psalms — Chapter 88

MISERICORDIAS DOMINI IN AETERNUM CANTABO. Lapide: Psalm 88 — the great covenant psalm. "The mercies of the Lord I will sing forever." Lapide: the eternal song of divine mercy — the proper occupation of the soul in this life and in the life to come. The entire psalm is a meditation on God's covenant with David (vv.4-5, 20-38), which is fulfilled in Christ the eternal Son of David. Lapide: "In generationem et generationem" — the mercy of God spans every generation, never exhausted, always new.
