Psalms — Chapter 85

TU DOMINE SUAVIS ET MITIS. Lapide: Psalm 85 — "For Thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild, and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon Thee." The three divine attributes: sweetness (suavis), mildness (mitis), and abundant mercy (multus in misericordia). Lapide: these are the qualities of God as experienced by the devout soul in prayer — not the terrible justice of the judge but the tender mercy of the Father. Christ called Himself "meek and humble of heart" (Mt. 11:29) — these attributes of the Father are incarnated in the Son.
