QUI REGIS ISRAEL INTENDE. Lapide: Psalm 79 — "Give ear, O Thou that rulest Israel: Thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep." The image of God as Shepherd of Israel, leading his people like sheep. Lapide: "qui sedes super Cherubim" (who sittest above the Cherubim) — the divine transcendence (above the highest angelic order) combined with the pastoral intimacy of leading sheep. The combination of transcendence and condescension is the mystery of God's dealing with His people.
