DEUS AUTEM REX NOSTER ANTE SAECULA. Lapide: Psalm 73 — "But God is our King before ages: He hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth." Lapide: "ante saecula" — before the ages, before all time: the divine kingship is eternal, not merely historical. "Operatus est salutem in medio terrae" — He has worked salvation IN THE MIDST OF THE EARTH: the Incarnation as the central event of all history, the axis around which all time revolves. Lapide: "in medio" = at the center, geographically (Jerusalem) and temporally (the fullness of time, Gal. 4:4) and cosmically.
