Psalms — Chapter 6
DOMINE NE IN FURORE TUO ARGUAS ME. Lapide: Psalm 6 — the first of the seven penitential psalms. "O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy fury, nor chastise me in Thy anger." Lapide: David (and every penitent) does not pray to escape all correction — divine chastisement is medicinal and loving (Heb. 12:6). He prays to be corrected in mercy, not in wrath. Lapide distinguishes: the wrath of justice (which the damned endure) from the corrective mercy (which the sinner on earth experiences). We flee not from God but to God.
