Psalms — Chapter 18

CAELI ENARRANT GLORIAM DEI. Lapide: Psalm 18: "The heavens show forth the glory of God." One of the great texts of natural theology. Lapide: the created order — visible and ordered, vast and beautiful — is a book of divine revelation. The invisible attributes of God (His power, wisdom, beauty, providence) are made visible through the things He has made (Rom. 1:20). Lapide gives an extended meditation: the heavens speak without words (v.4: "there are no speeches nor languages where their voices are not heard") — a universal, silent proclamation accessible to every rational creature. The theological proof of God's existence from the beauty of creation is not an addition to faith but a preamble to it.
