Psalms — Chapter 150

LAUDATE DOMINUM IN SANCTIS EIUS. Lapide: Psalm 150 — the great doxological conclusion of the entire Psalter. "Praise ye the Lord in His holy places: praise Him in the firmament of His power." Lapide: the six-verse crescendo of praise is the liturgical summit of the Psalter and of all Scripture. "Laudate eum in virtutibus eius" (v.2) — praise Him for His mighty acts (the works of creation, Providence, Redemption). Lapide: the multiple instruments of vv.3-5 (trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel, strings, organs, cymbals) = the totality of human artistic expression offered to God in praise. The Church's music — Gregorian chant, polyphony, organ, all sacred music — is the fulfillment of this verse.
