Psalms — Chapter 141

CUM DEFECIT EX ME SPIRITUS MEUS. Lapide: Psalm 141 — "When my spirit failed me, then Thou knewest my paths." The prayer of complete desolation: the spirit failing within, no human support (v.5: "no man that would know me... no man that careth for my soul"). Lapide: this is Christ's experience at Gethsemane and the Cross — abandoned by the disciples, rejected by His people, apparently forsaken by the Father. And yet: "thou knewest my paths" — God knows the way even when the soul cannot see it.
