Psalms — Chapter 130

DOMINE NON EST EXALTATUM COR MEUM. Lapide: Psalm 130 — "Lord, my heart is not exalted: nor are my eyes lofty. Neither have I walked in great things, nor in wonders above me." The psalm of perfect humility. Lapide: the three renunciations — of proud thought (heart not exalted), proud look (eyes not lofty), proud ambition (great things, wonders beyond capacity). Lapide: this brief psalm (3 verses) is the condensed theology of the virtue of humility. "As a child that is weaned is towards his mother, so is my soul within me" (v.2) — the image of the weaned child who is content with the mother's presence without demanding the breast: the soul at peace with God without seeking consolations, the beginning of pure love.
