Psalms — Chapter 121

LAETATUS SUM IN HIS QUAE DICTA SUNT MIHI. Lapide: Psalm 121 — "I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: we shall go into the house of the Lord." The joy of the pilgrim who hears "Let us go to Jerusalem." Lapide: literally the joy of the Israelite summoned to the pilgrimage feasts. Allegorically: the soul's joy at the summons to enter the Church through faith and the sacraments. Anagogically: the supreme joy of the dying soul told by the Church's final rites "we shall go into the house of the Lord" — the heavenly Jerusalem. Lapide: Augustine wrote his most beautiful meditations on this verse: the joy of going to the eternal city.
