Jeremiah — Chapter 39

Synopsis: The fall of Jerusalem: Zedekiah flees, is captured at Jericho, his sons killed before his eyes, he is blinded and taken to Babylon. The city is burned. Jeremiah is freed from prison and given his choice of remaining or going to Babylon.

Verse 11

Now Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had given charge concerning Jeremias by the hand of Nabuzardan the general of the army, saying: Take him, and set thine eyes on him, and do him no harm. Lapide notes the irony: Jeremiah is protected by the enemy conqueror while his own people imprisoned him. God honors those who honor His word, through whatever unexpected instruments.
