Jeremiah — Chapter 38
Synopsis: The princes throw Jeremiah into the cistern of Melchiah (a muddy pit); Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian rescues him. Jeremiah secretly counsels Zedekiah to surrender; Zedekiah is afraid of the Jews who had already defected to the Chaldeans.
Verse 7
Now Abdemelech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremias in the dungeon. Ebed-Melech (= 'servant of the king') the Ethiopian — a Gentile — saves Jeremiah when all the Jews persecute him. Lapide: a type of the Gentile Church receiving Christ's message when Jewish leaders rejected it; also an example that providence uses unexpected instruments to save His servants.
