Jeremiah — Chapter 33

Synopsis: God continues the consolation: He will restore the fortress of Sion; the good Branch of David will flourish (v.15 = the Messianic promise of ch.23); the Levitical priesthood will be renewed. God's covenant with day and night will be more easily broken than His covenant with David and with the Levites.

Verse 15

In those days, and at that time, I will make the bud of justice to spring forth unto David, and he shall do judgment and justice in the earth. 'Germen Justum' = Christ (same as 23:5). Lapide: the double mention (in chs.23 and 33) confirms the certainty of this Messianic promise.

Verse 20

Thus saith the Lord: If you can make void my covenant with the day, and my covenant with the night, so that day and night should not be in their seasons: Then also may my covenant with David my servant be made void. The irrevocability of the Davidic covenant compared to the irrevocability of the natural order. Lapide: this is the strongest Old Testament guarantee of the permanence of the Messianic kingship (Christ's royal office in the Church) and the Levitical priesthood (transformed into the New Covenant priesthood).
