Jeremiah — Chapter 32

Synopsis: During the siege, Jeremiah is commanded by God to purchase his cousin's field at Anathoth — a prophetic sign that 'houses, fields and vineyards shall again be possessed in this land.' Jeremiah's prayer of bewilderment; God's reassurance.

Verse 8

And Hanameel my uncle's son came to me, according to the word of the Lord, into the court of the prison, and said to me: Buy my field, which is in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. The commanded purchase of the field during the siege = prophetic guarantee of Israel's eventual restoration to the land. Lapide: a magnificent act of faith in God's word — buying real estate when the city is being destroyed. Applied to all those who make long-term investments of faith when circumstances seem most hopeless.
