Jeremiah — Chapter 28

Synopsis: Hananiah the false prophet breaks Jeremiah's yoke and promises within two years the end of Babylon's power. Jeremiah replies calmly; then God tells him to replace wooden chains with iron ones. Hananiah dies within the year.

Verse 15

And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet: Hear now, Hananias, the Lord hath not sent thee, and thou hast made this people trust in a lie. The prophetic test: a prophet who predicts peace without moral conversion is a false prophet; only suffering and judgment vindicate true prophetic credentials (the 'eschatological test' of Deut.18:22). Lapide applies this against all who preach consolation without demanding repentance.
