Jeremiah — Chapter 27
Synopsis: Jeremiah wears symbolic chains and sends messages to neighboring kings (Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, Sidon) and to Zedekiah: submit to Nabuchodonosor or perish. Do not listen to false prophets who promise peace.
Verse 5
I made the earth, and the men, and the beasts that are upon the face of the earth, by my great power, and by my stretched out arm: and I have given it to whom it seemed good in my eyes. God's sovereignty over all nations and kingdoms — He can give them to Nabuchodonosor as easily as He once gave Canaan to Israel. Lapide: this verse is foundational to the theology of temporal sovereignty: all legitimate power ultimately comes from God.
