Genesis — Chapter 47

Verse 9

AND JACOB SAID TO PHARAOH: THE DAYS OF MY PILGRIMAGE ARE A HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEARS, FEW AND EVIL, AND THEY ARE NOT COME UP TO THE DAYS OF THE PILGRIMAGE OF MY FATHERS. — Jacob blesses Pharaoh (vv. 7, 10) — the greater blessing the lesser (Heb. 7:7). Jacob's characterization of his life as \"few and evil, and they are not come up to the days of my fathers\" is the meditation of a great holy man on the brevity and suffering of earthly life compared to eternity and compared to the patriarchs who preceded him. Lapide: \"Days of pilgrimage\" = this life is pilgrimage, not home. Even 130 years is but a pilgrim's journey.
