Genesis — Chapter 34

Verse 1

AND DINA THE DAUGHTER OF LIA WENT OUT TO SEE THE WOMEN OF THAT COUNTRY. — The rape of Dina by Shechem, and the massacre of the Shechemites by Simeon and Levi. Lapide condemns the sin of Shechem and notes Dina's imprudence: \"curiosity and the love of spectacles and novelties is the seed of many evils.\" Morally: unmarried women must not wander without just cause. The vengeance of Simeon and Levi: while excessive, reflects the natural law's demand for condign punishment of such a crime.
