2 Samuel — Chapter 9

Verse 1

David asked: \"Is there anyone remaining of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?\" Lapide: David's fidelity to his covenant with Jonathan, even benefiting Jonathan's son after the father's death, illustrates: \"Who was kind to his enemies could not forget his friends\" (Theodoretus). A figure of Christ who never forgets those He has loved.

Verse 8

Who am I, thy servant, that thou shouldst look upon such a dead dog as I am? Lapide notes Miphibosheth's profound humility; he calls himself a \"dead dog\" — helpless, lame in both feet, orphaned. David's generosity toward him is a type of Christ's mercy toward the lame soul, restoring it to the table of the King.
