2 Samuel — Chapter 8
Verse 2
And he measured Moab with a line, casting them down to the ground; and he measured two lines, one to put to death, and one to save alive. Lapide explains the \"cord\" as a metaphor for David's just distribution of conquered peoples — mercifully sparing the greater number while executing the most guilty leaders.
Verse 14
And all Edom was made subject to David. Lapide: fulfilment of Isaac's blessing to Jacob (Gen. 27:29): \"Be lord of thy brethren, and let thy mother's children bow down to thee.\" The Edomites (descendants of Esau) serve David (of Jacob's line). David composed Psalm 59 to mark this victory.
Verse 15
And David reigned over all Israel, and David did judgment and justice to all his people. Lapide praises David's administration of justice as the model for all Christian princes.
