And David said to Semei: Thou shalt not die. Lapide: David's pardon of Semei shows the magnanimity of the restored king; but he notes David on his deathbed (3 Kgs 2:8-9) instructed Solomon to bring Semei's grey hairs down with blood — the pardon was conditional and personal, not absolute. Lapide reconciles the two passages at length.
