2 Chronicles — Chapter 13

Verse 5

IN PACTUM SALIS — Lapide: \"that is, in a firm, stable, and eternal covenant. For salt preserves things from corruption; hence salt is the symbol of eternity, as I noted at Leviticus 3:12.\" The covenant of David's house is eternal, though conditioned on faithfulness.

Verse 11

PROPONUNTUR PANES IN MENSA MUNDISSIMA — Lapide follows Torniellus: after Sesac king of Egypt plundered the Temple, only one table and one candlestick were left of Solomon's ten, and the Jews were thereafter content with these single furnishings as in the days before Solomon's Temple.

Verse 15

PERTERRUIT DEUS JEROBOAM — God terrified Jeroboam's 800,000 when Judah cried out to the Lord and the priests sounded the trumpets; 500,000 Israelites fell. Lapide: victory comes to those who trust God and not to those who trust numbers.
