David therefore took the crown of Melchom from his head — Lapide: The Hebrews read Malcham (their king), meaning the crown of the Ammonite king. But this crown belonged to an idol; idols' crowns were to be burned with the idols (Deut. 7). Therefore David took the precious stones from it to make a diadem, but could not wear the crown itself.
