1 Chronicles — Chapter 19
Verse 4
Hanon therefore shaved their heads, and cut off their garments from the buttocks to the feet, and sent them away. Lapide: To shave half the beard was the gravest possible insult among Semitic peoples. David's response — telling them to stay at Jericho until their beards grew — shows kingly solicitude for the honour of his servants.
Verse 13
Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord will do that which is good in His sight. Lapide: Joab's words are a model of Christian warfare — courage for one's people and for God's cities, with final confidence left to divine Providence. \"The Lord will do what is good in His sight\" expresses perfect submission to God's sovereign will.
