1 Chronicles — Chapter 11
Verse 2
Moreover in times past even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: for the Lord thy God said to thee: Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be the prince over them. Lapide: The king is the shepherd of the people, as Homer calls Agamemnon the shepherd of peoples. David's kingship was prophetically ordained by God through Samuel.
Verse 9
And David went on growing and increasing, and the Lord of hosts was with him. Lapide (brief): God's presence is the cause of true growth in authority and virtue — David's greatness came not from himself but from the Lord.
