Zechariah — Chapter 11
Verse 12
Et appenderunt mercedem meam triginta argenteos
'And they weighed for my wages thirty pieces of silver.' Matthew 27:9-10 cites this in connection with Judas's betrayal, attributing the fulfilment to Jeremiah—a famous textual problem that à Lapide resolves by noting Matthew follows the Septuagint tradition, which circulated certain Jeremianic texts under Zechariah's name, and that Matthew's argument depends on the substance of the prophecy rather than its precise attribution. The potter's field purchased with blood-money fulfils both Jeremiah's symbolic purchase (Jer. 32) and Zechariah's oracle.
