Psalms — Chapter 71

DEUS IUDICIUM TUUM REGI DA. Lapide: Psalm 71 — the great Messianic royal psalm. "Give to the king Thy judgment, O God: and to the king's son Thy justice." Lapide: the King and the King's Son = the Messiah, the eternal Son of David. The psalm describes the universal reign of the just king in terms that exceed any historical monarch: he shall reign from sea to sea (v.8), all kings shall adore him (v.11), all nations shall serve him (v.11), his name shall endure before the sun (v.17). Lapide: no human king fulfills these conditions; only Christ.
