Psalms — Chapter 39

HOLOCAUSTUM ET PRO PECCATO NON POSTULASTI. Lapide: Psalm 39 — cited in Heb. 10:5-7 as spoken by Christ at the Incarnation. "Sacrifice and oblation Thou didst not desire... holocausts and sin-offerings Thou didst not require. Then said I: Behold I come." Lapide: the Incarnation as the replacement of the Old Law's sacrifices. The body prepared for Christ (Heb. 10:5: "a body Thou hast fitted to me" — LXX version) is the instrument of the one perfect sacrifice. Lapide: "In capite libri scriptum est de me" — "In the head of the book it is written of me": Christ is the subject of the entire Old Testament, from Genesis onward; the whole of Scripture points to Him.
