Psalms — Chapter 117

LAPIDEM QUEM REPROBAVERUNT AEDIFICANTES. Lapide: Psalm 117 — "The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner." The most frequently cited verse in the NT from the Psalter: Mt. 21:42; Mk. 12:10-11; Lk. 20:17; Acts 4:11; 1 Pet. 2:7. Lapide: the rejected stone = Christ rejected by the Jewish leaders (the builders of the Temple and the theocratic state); become the cornerstone = the foundation of the Church and of the entire order of salvation. The paradox: what human builders discard, God makes the most important structural element. Lapide: "a Domino factum est istud et est mirabile in oculis nostris" — this is the Lord's doing and it is wonderful in our eyes: the Resurrection as the miracle that transforms rejection into foundation.
