Proverbs — Chapter 25

Verse 2

Gloria Dei celare verbum: et gloria regum investigare sermonem

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; and the glory of kings to search it out. Lapide: God's glory consists (in part) in the deep concealment of His wisdom in the mysteries of creation and Scripture — not to prevent discovery but to invite diligent inquiry. \"Gloria regum investigare\" = the glory of kings and wise men is to investigate these concealed things — to devote their power and intelligence to seeking the wisdom hidden in nature, Scripture, and history. Lapide: This verse justifies theological inquiry, natural science, and all earnest search for truth, as participation in royal and divine wisdom.

Verse 11

Mala aurea in lectis argenteis, qui loquitur verbum in tempore suo

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Lapide: The beauty and value of timely, apt speech. \"Mala aurea\" (golden apples) = things of the highest beauty and value. \"Lectis argenteis\" (silver settings/trays) = an elegant display enhancing the beauty. \"Verbum in tempore suo\" = a word spoken at the right time, in the right circumstances, to the right person. Lapide: Opportune speech — pastoral, practical, comforting, or instructive — given at the precise moment of need is one of the highest exercises of wisdom and charity.
