Proverbs — Chapter 20

Verse 1

Luxuriosa res vinum, et tumultuosa ebrietas: quicumque his delectatur, non erit sapiens

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is brawling; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Lapide: Chapter 20 opens with a strong warning against drunkenness. Wine \"mocks\" — it makes a fool of the one who overindulges, exposing him to ridicule and causing him to act foolishly. \"Tumultuosa ebrietas\" = strong drink (inebriating liquor) causes brawls and disorder. Lapide: Moderate use of wine is lawful and even beneficial (1 Tim. 5:23; Prov. 31:6-7); the sin is excess. He lists the effects of drunkenness: it clouds reason, excites passion, loosens the tongue to scandal and profanity, occasions quarrels and sexual immorality, and wastes resources. The Fathers frequently compare drunkenness to idolatry because both are forms of slavery to a creature.

Verse 6

Multi homines misericordes vocantur: virum autem fidelem quis inveniet?

Many men proclaim their own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? Lapide: A sharp observation on the gap between profession and practice. Many claim to be merciful, kind, and faithful — \"misericordes vocantur\" = they call themselves (or are called by others) merciful. But truly faithful men — those who keep their word, who do not change with circumstances, who can be trusted absolutely — are rare. Lapide: Fidelity (fides, faithfulness) is one of the rarest and most precious human virtues. The world abounds in those who promise; it is poor in those who perform.

Verse 27

Lucerna Domini spiraculum hominis, quae investigat omnia praecordia ventris

The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost depths. Lapide: A profound anthropological and theological statement. \"Spiraculum hominis\" (the breath/spirit of man) = the rational soul, which God breathed into Adam (Gen. 2:7). \"Lucerna Domini\" = this soul is God's lamp — He uses it to illuminate, examine, and search the innermost recesses of the human person (\"praecordia ventris\" = the hidden depths of the heart). Lapide: The rational soul is the image of God in man (imago Dei); through it, God's light penetrates to the core of human consciousness. This verse is a key text for the theology of conscience.
