In Malachi, à Lapide expounds the last of the canonical prophets as the herald of the New Covenant's pure oblation (Mal. 1:11) — which the Council of Trent adduced as the clearest Old Testament prophecy of the Mass — and the forerunner oracle (Mal. 3:1; 4:5) as a prediction of John the Baptist cited by Christ Himself. The closing curse-turned-promise marks the threshold of the four centuries of prophetic silence before the Incarnation.
