Jeremiah — Chapter 36

Synopsis: God commands Jeremiah to write all his oracles in a scroll. Baruch reads them publicly in the Temple. The princes hear and are frightened. Jehoiakim the king cuts the scroll and burns it, piece by piece, but Jeremiah is told to rewrite it with more added.

Verse 23

And when Jehudi had read three or four pages, he cut it with the penknife, and threw it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed with the fire. Jehoiakim burning the scroll = the destruction of prophecy by human authority. Lapide: God's response (rewriting with more added) teaches that human power can suppress but never destroy divine truth. The scroll burned by kings is always rewritten with additions.
