Jeremiah — Chapter 24

Synopsis: Third book of Jeremiah's oracles (after Jechoniah's deportation). Two baskets of figs: the good figs = the exiles who will be restored and given a new heart; the bad figs = Zedekiah and those who remained in the land or fled to Egypt — they will perish.

Verse 7

And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: because they shall return to me with their whole heart. The new heart promised to the exiles = the New Covenant (anticipating Jer.31:31-34). Lapide: this verse is one of the great prophecies of interior religion, where the knowledge of God is not external legal observance but an interior transformation of the heart.
