Jeremiah — Chapter 16
Synopsis: God forbids Jeremiah to marry or attend mourning feasts or joyful banquets — signs of total desolation to come. But ultimately (v.14-21) a new Exodus from all nations will surpass even the original Exodus from Egypt; the nations will renounce their idols.
Verse 14
Behold the days come, saith the Lord, and it shall be said no more: The Lord liveth, that brought forth the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt: But, The Lord liveth, that brought the children of Israel out of the land of the north, and out of all the lands to which I had cast them out. The new and greater Exodus through Christ surpasses the Egyptian Exodus. Lapide: this verse is quoted in ch.23 as well; the complete eschatological gathering of Israel from all nations through the Gospel exceeds in glory all previous acts of deliverance.
