Jeremiah — Chapter 14

Synopsis: Drought and famine in Judah. Jeremiah's intercession (in a beautiful prayer) refused by God — not even Moses and Samuel could persuade Him at this point (15:1). The false prophets promise rain and peace; God promises sword, famine, and pestilence.

Verse 8

O the expectation of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble: why wilt thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man turning in to lodge? Jeremiah's beautiful prayer: addressing God as 'the hope of Israel, its Savior in time of trouble' — appealing to His covenant name and mercy. Lapide notes: this is the model of bold but humble intercession — the intercessor puts God's own promises against His threatened punishment.
