AND THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF ESAU THE SAME IS EDOM. — The genealogy of Esau and the kings of Edom. A relatively brief chapter (Lapide is concise): the purpose of this table is to show that God's promise to Esau (Gen. 27:39-40) was fulfilled — he too became a great nation with kings, though subordinate to Jacob's line in the ultimate blessing of the Messiah.
