Verse 5

But the eye of their God was upon the ancients of the Jews — The divine providence, grace, and favour watched over the Jews, so that the Persian prefect Thathanai did not impede the work of building the Temple and the city. Lapide: Scripture attributes eyes to God not properly and literally (as the Anthropomorphites erroneously held), but metaphorically, to signify that God sees all things, accommodating Himself to human understanding.
