Jerusalem compared to a vine (vitis): if the vine's wood is useless even when whole, how much more when burned? Lapide reads this as a refutation of Jewish confidence in election without corresponding virtue. The vine's only use is its fruit; Israel's only value is its fidelity to the covenant.
