2 Samuel — Chapter 17
Verse 1
Achitophel's counsel: pursue David at once with 12,000 men by night. Lapide notes this was truly wise counsel militarily — \"Celerity in war avails much\" (Julius Caesar: \"Veni, vidi, vici\"). God frustrated it through Hushai to give David time to escape.
Verse 23
And Achitophel seeing that his counsel was not followed, saddled his ass, and arose and went home to his house and to his city, and put his house in order and hanged himself. Lapide: Achitophel as a type of Judas — both betrayed their lord for political ambition; both died by hanging; both ended in hopeless despair. The parallel is made explicit by Lapide but no specific citations survive legibly in this section.
