2 Chronicles — Chapter 32

Verse 8

CUM ILLO EST BRACHIUM CARNEUM; NOBISCUM DOMINUS DEUS NOSTER — Hezekiah's rallying speech to the besieged: \"With him is an arm of flesh, but with us the Lord our God, who is our helper and will fight our battles.\" The soldiers' hearts were strengthened by these words.

Verse 21

ET MISIT DOMINUS ANGELUM QUI PERCUSSIT OMNEM VIRUM ROBUSTUM ET BELLATOREM — a single Angel destroyed all the mighty men and commanders of the Assyrian host. Lapide notes Herodotus's garbled version (mice gnawing bowstrings) and explains: \"for Egypt, [he] substitutes Egypt; for Hezekiah, a priest; for God, Vulcan; for the Angel, mice.\" The Assyrian king himself was preserved to witness God's majesty, as Pharaoh was preserved through the ten plagues.
