2 Chronicles — Chapter 16

Verse 9

OCULI ENIM DOMINI CONTEMPLANTUR UNIVERSAM TERRAM ET PROBENT FORTITUDINEM HIS QUI CORDE PERFECTO CREDUNT IN EUM — Hanani the prophet to Asa: God's omniscient gaze seeks hearts that trust Him perfectly, in order to strengthen them. Asa who had trusted God against the Ethiopians now trusted in Syria.

Verse 12

NEC IN INFIRMITATE SUA QUAESIVIT DOMINUM SED MAGIS IN MEDICORUM ARTE CONFISUS EST — Asa in his illness of the feet trusted more in the skill of physicians than in God. Lapide discusses whether 'physicians' here means sorcerers or true physicians, and concludes Asa sinned by placing excessive hope in medicine before invoking God.
