1 Chronicles — Chapter 14

Verse 2

And David understood that the Lord had confirmed him king over Israel, and that his kingdom was exalted on high because of his people Israel. Lapide: David recognises the divine confirmation in the common consent of all Israel, in the honour paid by foreign kings like Hiram, and in the success of his enterprises — all as signs of God's working.

Verse 14

And David inquired again of God... and God said to him: Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the pear trees... for God is gone before thee to smite the army of the Philistines. Lapide: God commands David to come at the enemy from an unexpected quarter — from the side of the pear grove — because the Philistines had placed their idols there, thinking themselves safest. God destroys both the idols and their worshippers.
