But («) Gorgias being ca- ptayne ot the places, taking-vnto him ‘ftrangers often warred againft the lewes. 1s. And the Idumeans that kept the commodious holds , re- ceiued them that were chafed from lerufalem , and attempted to make barrel. 16. And they that were with Machabeus , befeeching our Loed by prayers that he would be their helper , made an affault vpon the holds of the Idumeans: 17. and ftickingto it with great force, they wanne the places, killed them that came in the way , & flew altogether no leffe then twentie thoufand, 18. And wheras certaine were fled into two towres very ftrong,hauing.al prouifionto make refiftance, 19.Ma- chabeusfor the expugning of them , leauing Simon and lofeph , & alfo Zacheus , and {uch as were with chem very manie , himfelfrurned to chofe-battels which forced more, 20, Butthey that were with Simon, being led with couetoufnes , were perfuaded with money by certaine that were in the towres: and taking feuentie thoufand didrachmaes, they let certayne efcape, 21. But when it was told Machabeus what was kling their head with earth, and being girded about the joynes with hairccloths, 26. lying flatte.at the brinyme of the alvar, that he would be Propicious to them , and an enemic to thcir enemies , arid an aduerfarie to their aduerfaries, as the law faith. 27. And fo after prayer taking weapons, going forth:fomewhat far out of the citic,& being come very neere the enemies they pitched, 28%. But when there was a fore fight, there appeared to the aduerfaries rom heaven fiue men vpon horfes , comesie with golden bridles , conducting the lewes : 30. of whom two hauing Mcchabeus between them , compafling him round abourwith their armour , kept him fafe : and againft the aduerfaries they thrcw darts , and fire bals, wherby both confounded with blindnes, and filled with perturbation they fel. 31. And there were flaize twentie thoufand fue hundred , and horfemen fix hurdred.32.But Timothee fled into Gazara aftrong hold, wherof Chercas was the captayne, 33. Aud Machabeus , aud they that were with him joyfully befieged the hold foure dayes. 34. But they that were within , crufting to the place , blafphemed aboue meafure, & caft torth abominable words, 35.But whé the fitth day appeared, (¢)twenue yong a) ce pee cena wf. For he fayd ; Let vs preuent to make peace with him, the euils , chat we haue done. againft him , and againft his brother, and ag‘inft his nation, 6. And he gaue him authoritie to gather anarmie, and to make weapons, and to be himfelf his felow: and the hoftages that were in the caftel, he cotnmanded to be deliuered to him,7. And Machabeus granted to Lyfias requeftes , in al things haning refpe@ to the commonwealth and whatfoeuer Macha- beus wrote to Lyfias , concerning the lewes , the King granted it. 16. For there were epiftles writcen to the lewes from Lyhias , conteyning - this tenure: LYSIAS tothe people of the lewes health. 37, John an Abfalom that were fent from you , deliuering the wrytings , requefted that I would accomplith thofe things which by them were fignified. 18. Therefore whatfoeuer might be bronght to the King declared vnto him: & that which che mazters permitted I granted. 19.
